OWLPEN has long been
recognised as one of England's most romantic manor houses. In 2006 it was
voted a finalist in the Country Life–Savills award for "England's Favourite
Manor House". The Tudor manor (1450-1616) stands with its early formal
garden of magnificent yews at the centre of a clutch of medieval landmark
buildings. Many are now adapted as quite exceptional award-winning Cotswold
holiday cottages.
The Owlpen estate, steeped in
900 years of history, forms its own hidden valley under the edge of the
Cotswolds, surrounded by woods and hills. The licensed Cyder House is an
atmospheric medieval restaurant set at the heart of the hamlet. It serves
home-cooked gourmet meals and light lunches in the summer with an emphasis
on the fresh produce of the working farm and garden. The Mander family
welcome you to Owlpen to experience this beautiful and dreamy corner of
south-west England first hand and at leisure. We hope these pages will give
you some flavour of the experience of Owlpen: "the jewel of the Cotswolds".
The Owlpen lifestyle today continues the family traditions of hospitality,
with the motto: Vive bene, "live well". Sir Nicholas and Lady Mander
Idyllic self-catering holiday
cottage accommodation on the stunning North Devon coast between Combe Martin
& Ilfracombe. At Watermouth Cove on the beautiful North Devon coast there is
a pretty complex of eight cottages. Once the stables and coach house of
Watermouth Castle, they were converted to holiday accommodation 30 years
ago. Watermouth Cove Cottages are situated beside the castle grounds, just
200 yards from the harbour and South West coastal path.
The cottages are set in a
wooded valley and surrounded by lovely Devon countryside. The cottage
grounds are a haven for a wide range of wild life including Squirrels, Foxes
and many birds such as Woodpeckers, Jays, Goldfinches, Nuthatches as well as
the usual Robins and Blue Tits. Buzzards regularly soar over the cottages
and Egrets have visited the Castle pond again this year.
Hollings Hill farm is a
working dairy farm of about 300 acres. Set at the foot of the Malvern Hills
situated east of Hereford, west of Malvern and north of the historic town of
Ledbury, the Hollings Hill farmhouse is of a late 17th century Georgian
style. It is believed to have been built for a Reverend Hollings.
Hollings Hill farm is a dairy
farm that keeps 250 dairy cows and 100 calves, mainly British Friesians on
300 acres. We run a year round breeding programme so there are always
several new born calves on the farm. We also grow maize, potatoes, wheat and
have an apple orchard. Around the farm there are walnut trees (producing the
biggest walnuts you’ve ever seen!) and pear trees. It’s a fantastic site for
mushrooms in autumn.
Set in 300 acres of rolling
Somerset countryside on the edge of the Mendip Hills Moores farm lies
between the villages of Holcombe and Stratton on the Fosse approximately 10
miles south of Bath. Managed as a traditional English estate and spread over
three valleys the farm mixes arable land and open pasture with ancient
woodlands and stream-fed lakes making this one of the most picturesque farms
in the area. Holcombe is an old village which even has mention in the
Doomsday Book. In 1348 the Black Death affected nearly all the inhabitants
of the village but those who survived moved to a new settlement further up
the hill where the present village of Holcombe stands today.
The farm is a traditional
Somerset mixed farm growing a variety of arable crops. Beef cattle or sheep
usually graze the pasture land in the warmer months. Strong emphasis is
placed upon conservation and as a result there is an abundance of wildlife
such as deer, badgers, foxes, hares, wild partridge, buzzards, barn owls and
horseshoe bats. An exciting addition to this are the otters which were
sighted on a number of occasions last year. Rare species of orchids also
grow in the fields above Church Lake. There are three lakes on the farm –
old Monastic lakes which have been restored in recent years but were
originally dug by the Monks of Keynsham in the 12th Century for the purpose
of keeping fish for food reserves.
Explore the inside of the
cottage, look in the garden, and find out about the history of the
Farmhouse. There are lots of places to visit including Harry Potter's
Hogwarts Castle and many great places to eat. We are a small family run
business and would be delighted to welcome you to beautiful historic
Warkworth.
Old Barns Farmhouse is a
beautiful grade II listed building situated on the outskirts of the small
village of Warkworth with fantastic views of the North sea and Coquet
Island. The original stone built dwelling was constructed in approximately
1802 with the addition of the servants quarters some one hundred years
later. The property is set in half an acre of land and possesses the charm
and tranquillity of the countryside. Old Barns Farmhouse has had the
original servants quarters (left) converted into a self contained self
catering holiday cottage under the guidance of the English Tourism Council.
We have a commitment to high standards and hope you enjoy your holiday. Old
Barns Farmhouse Holiday Cottage is a self contained annexe to the main
farmhouse, converted into holiday accommodation under the guidance of the
English Tourism Council.
